SURE By Ramboll: An Innovative Digital Tool for Embedding Sustainability in Remediation Options Appraisals8 February at 1-2pm, Online Expert Talk |
In sustainable remediation the net benefits on human health are greater than the impacts of the remediation work on the environment, society, and economy. Selection of a sustainable remediation strategy is achieved by using a balanced decision-making process.
'SURE by Ramboll' is a free-to-use, online platform that helps to assess the sustainability of remedial options. The platform allows users to assess and compare the sustainability of multiple options against user-assigned sustainability criteria. The assessment results can then be shared with clients and stakeholders within the platform to request their review and comments. Once the assessment is completed, a custom PDF report of the whole assessment can be created and shared.
In this Expert Talk, Peter will provide an introduction to SURE, and outline how the tool can be used and the key functions, using a case study example which won the ESG Innovation Award at Environment Analyst's 2023 Sustainability Consulting Awards.

Land-Based Approach to Natural Capital Asset Management: Building Towards a Better Management of Natural Resources18 January at 1-2pm, Online Expert Talk |
The Environment Agency recognises that the full value of remediation in terms of the economic, social and environmental benefits is not well understood, and it is often viewed as a cost burden or liability. As such the total benefits of remediation are not fully understood or utilised in decision making, resulting in sites remaining derelict for years and opportunities to optimise value from public and private investment are missed.
In this Expert Talk, Yolande Macklin presented current research conducted for the Environment Agency on the development of a novel natural capital approach to evaluate the sustainability benefits from remediating and redeveloping contaminated brownfield sites. This proof-of-concept co-designed research is helping the Environment Agency develop new methods to measure and communicate the social, economic and environmental value of remediating contaminated sites to optimise the planning, funding and delivery of its land contamination functions.

A multi-disciplinary approach to assessing climate change impacts: Land contamination case study9 November at 13:00-14:30 BST, Online Expert Talk |
The growing importance of assessing the impacts of climate change on land contamination conceptual site models has been recognised as part of the July 2023 update to LCRM. Arcadis has built on the white paper prepared by the Society of Brownfield Risk Assessment (SoBRA) Guidance on Assessing Risk to Controlled Waters from UK Land Contamination Under Conditions of Future Climate Change, Version 1.0 (August 2022) to develop a screening framework and model to enable an impact assessment to be undertaken as part of Preliminary Risk Assessments, and beyond. The framework includes consideration of controlled waters and human health receptors, with further updates for additional receptors underway.
This Sustainability Delivery Group Expert Talk provided an overview of the context for the framework development and a high level overview of the methodology and outcomes.

Nutrogeddon: Delivering Nutrient Neutrality in the Housing Development Sector – the Challenges and Solutions11 October at 13:00-14:30 BST, Online Expert Talk |
Nitrogen and / or phosphorus neutrality must be achieved by new housing developments located in multiple catchments throughout England and Wales. Achieving neutrality can be difficult and costly and has prevented or delayed the construction of 145,000 homes. While solutions do exist, there are multiple challenges to overcome.
This Sustainability Delivery Group Expert Talk discusses these issues and shares case studies to demonstrate how neutrality can be achieved.

Impacts of Climate Change on Brownfield Regeneration – Risks and Opportunities27 September at 13:00-14:30 BST, Online panel discussion |
An increasing challenge for successfully regenerating Brownfield Land in the UK is shifting weather patterns associated with Climate Change. The past five years have seen an increasing trend of hotter, drier summers and milder wetter winters, interspersed with periods of abnormal (often wetter) weather. The increased frequency and intensity of wet weather creates significant challenges for managing earthworks on brownfield sites including damage to soil structure, contaminated (and uncontaminated) silt run-off and increased fluctuations in groundwater levels.
Post remediation, brownfield developments are also placing significant additional pressure on our fragile sewage and river systems due to the practice of diverting rainfall away from groundwater infiltration systems (e.g. soakaways) and into the sewage and river systems.
These changes have wide ranging implications for developers, consultants and contractors alike – from the risk assessment and design stages through to site implementation (to programme / specification) and the potential need for ‘future-proofing’ remediation & earthworks projects in tandem with development levels and drainage for flood protection.
Whilst there are clear risks, are there also opportunities for the brownfield regeneration industry to help deliver a more sustainable, circular economy – this topic will be explored with our expert panel, held with Brownfield & Regeneration Network premium partner Soilfix.

- Extremes of rainfall and impacts upon the site, groundwater & river levels – what are the impacts on project / contract delivery, sustainable drainage solutions, flood risk, sewer discharge considerations?

Stabilisation and Solidification has become widely applied across the UK and is no longer considered to be an emerging remediation or soil improvement technique, having been applied to a wide variety of contaminants and environmental settings. Perspectives on Tackling the Skills, Resource & Diversity Challenges in the Brownfield Sector8 November, Online panel discussion |
The brownfield sector is facing challenges across the board in resourcing and recruiting the people and skills required to fulfil current project requirements and enable growth. Additionally, in a recent survey the wider environmental profession was ranked the second least ethnically diverse sector in the UK.
Our Brownfield & Regeneration Network panel discussion on 8 November at 10:00 GMT, held in partnership with SiLC, brought together a diverse panel with a wide range of experiences, to discuss these challenges, including the current approach to recruitment and career development, and explore strategies to attract and recruit a more diverse workforce, and future-proof the sector to better meet changing industry and project demands.

Achieving Nutrient Neutrality in Brownfield Development19 October, Online webinar |
Nutrient neutrality is a means of ensuring that a development plan or project does not add to existing nutrient burdens within a catchment or result in a net increase in nutrients received by sensitive habitats downstream. However, this has considerable implications for the planning and development of brownfield sites where it is often harder to provide the necessary mitigation onsite due to spatial constraints or the density of the development.
